Why Defender Bulkhead Rust is Such a Big Problem
It really comes down to how these trucks are built, plus the materials Land Rover used. Water, salt, mud—all the stuff you find on roads—gets trapped in sneaky little spots: under the battery tray, down by the footwells, in and around the heater box, and up by those suspension turret mounts. Leave it long enough, and all that hidden moisture eats through the metal, eventually chewing holes and wrecking the truck’s structure.
It’s brutal because many Defenders still look solid from the outside, but the rust gets so bad inside the bulkhead that fixing it turns into a massive, expensive project. Sometimes people just give up and scrap the whole thing.
The usual rust magnets are
- The bottom of the bulkhead near your feet
- Around the battery tray
- The heater intake box
- Suspension turret mounts
- Weld seams and outrigger joints
Catching rust early makes a huge difference. Some warning signs—paint starting to bubble, damp carpets nobody can explain, a musty smell in the cabin, or if you poke anywhere and the metal feels soft or starts to crumble. Sometimes, if you look in the engine bay, you can even see daylight through holes you shouldn’t. Spotting these early can keep your Defender on the road a lot longer.
